The Toastmaster Journey
The Toastmasters journey is made up of different levels. Each level signifies a certain level of achievement in communication and leadership.
When you first start out as a new member of Toastmasters, you’re given your first manual. This manual is called the Competent Communicator. Once you finish all the speeches in that manual you are then a qualified Competent Communicator, and you can then progress on to the other levels.

The Toastmaster Levels
There are two streams to Toastmasters, one for communication and one for leadership. Both streams have different levels. They are as follows:
Communication Stream
Advanced Toastmaster Bronze (ATM-B)
- Achieve Competent Toastmaster award
- Complete two Advanced Communication and Leadership Program Manuals
Advanced Toastmaster Silver (ATM-S)
- Achieve Advanced Toastmaster Bronze award
- Complete two additional advanced manuals (different than the manuals completed for the ATM-B award)
- Conduct any two programs from The Better Speaker Series and/or The Successful Club Series
Advanced Toastmaster Gold (ATM-G)
- Achieve Advanced Toastmaster Silver award
- Complete two additional advanced manuals (different that the manuals completed for the ATM-B and ATM-S awards)
- Conduct a registered Success/Leadership Program, Success/Communication Program or a registered Youth Leadership Program
- Mentor a new member with the first three speech projects.
Leadership Stream
Competent Leader (CL)
- Achieve Competent Toastmaster award
- Serve at least six months as a Club officer (President, Vice President Education, Vice President Membership, Vice President Public Relations, Secretary, Treasurer, or Sergeant at Arms)
- Participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan.
- While a club officer, participate in a District sponsored Club officer training program.
- Conduct any two programs from The Successful Club Series
Advanced Leader (AL)
- Achieve Competent Leader award
- Serve a complete term as a District officer (District Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Public Relations Officer, Secretary, Treasurer, Division Governor, or Area Governor)
- Complete the High Performance Leadership Program
- Serve successfully as a Club Sponsor, Mentor, or Specialist.
Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)
This is the final level in Toastmasters. It is the most prestigious award that can be achieved. It is the result of finishing both streams of the Toastmaster journey; the communciation stream and leadership stream.
